Merawan Siput Jantan
Hopea odorata
Family: Dipterocarpaceae
A large tree reaches up to 45 m in height with
the base of the trunk reaching a diameter of 4.5 m. It grows in forests,
preferably near rivers, at altitudes between 0 and 600m.
This
species is very common in Peninsular Malaysia because it has been widely planted,
especially as a roadside tree because of its fast growth, and tall, straight
and clear bole. Besides that, this species produces a valuable timber known
as kayu
merawan that is very durable and strong, and often used to
make boats and canoes. However, in the wild it is rare, and the species is
considered as Vulnerable (VU) due to forest clearance.
